It was a while ago that Focal Professional ran an ad in Tape-Op with a quote from my reivew of their Solo6Be speakers. I have to say, since writing that review, I have listened to those speakers more days than not and am still impressed every time. No monitor is for everyone, but some really do offer a level of clairty that I believe to be “more accurate” than others. Their slogan “Listen to your music, not your speakers” makes sense to me. And no I do not have and endorsement deal with Focal – I just really dig these things, and am a big nerd about gear.
How do feel that these and CMS 65 compare to your Pro Ac’s? Thanks for your help! John
They’re totally different beasts. I think my review of the Pro Acs kind of spells out my impressions of what they do and do so well. They’re great speakers. Focals are great speakers as well. I’d say the best thing to do with try to find a way to spend some time with them and see what you dig. I know it’s a cop out in a way, but there’s not way I can tell you what your favorite color is – and they’re all colored to a certain degree.
I just got through rereading your Neve mic pre round up in Tape Op. Since it was not designed as a clone, I understand why you did not include the Great River. But I would be interested (assuming you have used/heard it) in what you think of its Nevish qualitites.

Hi Gary, I actually haven’t spent any time with the GR preamps, so I can’t say anything about it. I do know a number of people who really love them. I’m pretty sure Mercenary Audio has a rather generous policy about trying gear, so perhaps you can get a hold of the GR stuff and try it out…?
Actuall;y, I own the GR pre. I like it a great deal, but have never used a Neve or clone. Perhaps I can rent one.
